History of Grama Panchayat
Edayur Grama Panchayat is situated between the Panchayats of Valanchery, Marakkara, and Irimbiliyam in Tirur Taluk, and Kuruvva and Mookkanad in Perinthalmanna Taluk. The Panchayat was formed in 1960 by combining the regions of Edayur and Vadakkumpuram. Archaeological remains such as Nannangadis, Kudakkalls, and other ancient artefacts discovered from Pookkattiri and Mavandiyoor indicate that the area has been inhabited since ancient times. In earlier times, the region was covered by dense forests and was inhabited by tribal communities such as the Nayadis and Alars. According to local history, the region, situated between the territories of the Valluvanad Raja and the Zamorin, came to be known as Edayur. Munnakkal Palli was an ancient place of worship and later developed into an important commercial centre, where Arab traders purchased hill products such as dry ginger and pepper. Pookkattiyoor Temple is one of the oldest temples in the Panchayat. People from Edayur also participated in the National Movement and the Indian freedom struggle. Edayur is an excellent example of religious harmony and a diverse cultural tradition, where people belonging to different religions and holding different ideologies live together peacefully. The region has a rich cultural heritage, with several cultural organisations, artists, theatre personalities, and sportspersons emerging from the Panchayat.
